Recently, an Ohio couple has been charged with child endangerment after their 8-year-old son experienced a heroin overdose. Thankfully, the overdose was non-fatal.
Both Charles Dowdy and Danielle Simko are 31 years old and were arraigned this past Friday morning. According to WkyC, they are being held on $150,000 bond and are not allowed to have any kind of contact with their son.
On January 11th, 2017 police responded and went to the Danielle Simko’s grandparent’s house where the couple had been raising their son. Police found drugs and syringes on-site at the property.
According to The Washington Post, Charles Dowdy had reportedly told police that he and Simko were already in bed with their son (at 10:30pm) when they noticed that his lips started turning blue.
In the audio recording of the 911 call, a man’s voice can be heard begging the dispatcher to send emergency personnel quickly. The individuals making the call was likely Dowdy and he could be heard shouting at a woman nearby, likely Simko.
The couple was arrested immediately after their son suffered a heroin overdose. Dowdy said, “I think he was sleeping and I think what happened was he rolled over and I don’t think he could breathe, I think he was just, like, in the pillow and suffocated.”
According to the police report, the child’s birthday indicated that he was 8 years old although Dowdy claims he was only 7.
After first responders checked the boy’s pulse, they took him to Southwest General Medical Center where medical staff found a small bag of heroin and prescription pills literally tucked inside of his sock. Given this highly suspect situation, a urine test was taken and it was confirmed that heroin was in the 8-year-old boy’s system.
Dowdy admitted to using the drugs in the house earlier that day after police questioned him. However, how the heroin entered into the boy’s bloodstream has not been documented at this time. Both Dowdy and Simko were arrested at the hospital.
