Imagine it’s late at night and the phone rings. Your heart sinks and your stomach launches into your chest as local law enforcement and first responders explain that your child has just experienced a heroin overdose. You are in shock and at first, you are in denial – your son doesn’t have a drug problem…does he? After rushing to the hospital, you find that he’s been revived by Narcan (Naloxone). You embrace him tightly with relief. But then the anger sets in so you start lecturing. If you’re lucky, you find out that he wants addiction help and is ready to commit to treatment. But where do you go from here?
Kill the Heroin Epidemic Nationwide is a patient based community and organization that helps men and women suffering from addiction get the help and treatment they want, need and deserve. William Seemiller, founder and publisher of the organization started the organization after he started his own personal treatment plan and long-term recovery from heroin addiction. William is from Pennsylvania.
“I never thought I’d become a heroin addict. I was always so against drugs all my life,” William stated. When asked why he started using drugs, he responded, “I was going through a really difficult time in my life and just about anything that could take away the anxiety, heartache and pain I was experiencing sounded good to me”.
William started by recreationally using Percocet and Oxycodone as a way to cope with life’s difficulties and stressors, which over time, turned into a full blown addiction and daily use of heroin. “I would drive to the worst parts of Kensington almost every single day and buy several bundles of heroin at a time like it was no big deal”.
After finding a methadone clinic in Philadelphia, PA called “The Healing Way”, William started to share his experience as a recovering addict and advocate for others suffering from substance use disorder on Facebook.
Shortly after, William decided to start an organization which consists of a Facebook page, a website, a discussion forum and a blog. William expanded his reach when his company “Modern Image, LLC” (which owns Kill the Heroin Epidemic Nationwide™) purchased Heroin News and established the National Alliance of Addiction Treatment Centers (NAATC) (website coming soon).
William’s network of addiction recovery websites are purposed with the following mission:
1. Raise awareness on the heroin epidemic and provide information about addiction and recovery
2. Provide a free venue of support and encouragement for recovering addicts
3. Help men and women living in active addiction find top addiction treatment centers and drug rehab facilities to jump-start their long-term recovery
William states that he will only approve addiction treatment centers for recommendation on Kill the Heroin Epidemic Nationwide and accept drug rehab facilities into the NAATC that he genuinely believes in and meet a demanding set of standards.
Centers and facilities recommended by William’s organization pay a flat and nominal monthly sponsorship fee that supports his patient based community and keeps the operation running. Sponsorship funds pay to keep the website running, pay for marketing, expansion and special projects and enable staff to dedicate their time and efforts to the cause.
According to William, “I have received some slack by other so-called recovery advocates for getting funding from treatment centers we recommend”. William has talked to numerous supporters who genuinely believe the fact that William is so open and transparent about the way he runs his organization and community is intimidating to those who masquerade as philanthropists but are secretly getting paid as “head-hunters” by treatment centers. William has written extensive articles about patient-brokering, kickbacks and so-called “referral fees” and “bonuses”. These include:
William also writes articles for Huffington Post in order to reach and educate an even broader audience. “I believe putting an end to the drug, addiction and heroin epidemic starts with education and raising awareness”, said William. “The more people we reach, the more we have a chance at saving”.
William has multiple sections on his websites devoted to asking visitors to fill out a brief contact form if they need addiction help or treatment. While having insurance certainly helps and provides an addict with more options, William’s only criteria for helping an addict get treatment is a desire to get clean and a willingness to put in the necessary hard work and commit.
William has also attempted to create a treatment scholarship fund dedicated to helping those less financially fortunate that genuinely need help get the treatment they want, need and deserve. “Getting people to donate to help addicts isn’t easy,” William said. “Thus, it’s my hope that eventually we’ll have enough funding to create the scholarship fund ourselves. But for now, we’re still too new and lack the funding.”
Modern Image, LLC which includes Kill the Heroin Epidemic Nationwide, Heroin News and the National Alliance of Addiction Treatment Centers (NAATC) is only approximately 6 months old. And despite the fact that his community already includes over 115,000 followers and reaches almost 1.5 million people every month, William has big plans to expand and get much bigger. “This is only the beginning,” William said. “If we can accomplish this much in 6 months, imagine where we will be in 5 years.”
William has already received several offers to sell his organization and online community but William has no intention of selling. “This is my purpose. I was born for this”.
William genuinely feels that his experiences and education have led to this moment and what he is now doing with this organization. “But I couldn’t do it without my dedicated and caring staff”. William has a team of associates that assist with different parts of the organization and community. However, you can see all of them regularly contributing and participating on their free heroin addiction and recovery discussion forum. William and his staff are listed on the Kill the Heroin Epidemic Nationwide website under the “Meet Our Staff” section.
