A man named Robert Goldsmith, 30 years of age in Sunrise, Florida is now facing murder charges after a drug bust lead to a fatal car crash, according to authorities. The incidence occurred on the 3200 block of Northwest 84th Avenue this past Tuesday.
An informant reported that Goldsmith is a drug dealer and after authorities ran a check on his name, an active warrant was found in Broward County for aggravated battery with a firearm and attempted robbery with a firearm.
According to police, the informant called Robert Goldsmith to acquire $100 of crack cocaine and Goldsmith was to meet and deliver the drugs to him at Summerfield Apartments. Once the informant was handed the drugs, an unmarked police car equipped with sirens and police lights approached Goldsmith’s silver Nissan.
As a result, Goldsmith instantaneously tried to flee the scene and crashed into a canal adjacent to Summerfield Apartments. Goldsmith escaped through the car window and was immediately taken into custody by the authorities.
While the informant didn’t see anyone in the back seat of Goldsmith’s vehicle, Goldsmith told police there were two other people in the car with him. Detectives jumped into the canal in a rescue attempt but could not enter the sinking vehicle.
Sunrise Fire Rescue units responded to the scene and towed the car out of the water. Two bodies were found in the car. One was identified as the car’s owner Hannah Gonzalez and the other was a man identified as Marquis Garcia.
Goldsmith complained about shoulder pain and was taken to Westside Regional Hospital. he is now being held in Broward Main Jail on charges of murder during the commission of a felony, driving with a suspended license, selling cocaine and aggravated fleeing from a crime scene with serious injury or death.
